5:13p (Eagle Stop)

by Julian Richardson

Wind breaks between her
She paces back and forth
Mumbling
Her eyes stuck to the ground
I wish she’d hurry up, I gotta pee
Looking outside the windows
Looking for hope, for change
Keeping her head down and scanning items
rewards card?
Asking, but not really
She keeps staring out into the distance
Past the car lot across the street
And further past the trees poking out on the horizon
Her voice sounds off, distorted from normal
She watches as the faces leave
Whether face front or back of head
Have a blessed day

He towers over the counter
Fumbling with his pockets
And the glass protecting false hopes
Determined luck
He turns and glares
Scanning the room and keeping it to himself
Around him stands 2 people
Then 1
The doors fly open and he Waltz out
Looking again to the glass
His grin is wide as he stands on the curb
Waiting for a fool
For a someone who isn’t anyone who could be missed
Probably won’t be missed
He fidgets with his hands
Holding grey and shine
Asking if he could do something
But no one is listening

I get out of my car and walk
The doors fly open
The cashier says welcome
And heads turn to see the stranger she announced
I grab a drink
99¢ and delicious
I wait in line, as the cashier paces
Back and forth, confused
But probably not
2 people stand in front of me in line
Then 1
Then me, handing off my desire
And receiving it back
Mid-sentence of Everyone’s calling in and I need to pee
The doors open again,
And then again when I leave
As I turn to my car
In pursuit to leave
A man asks me something
A look of sly and deceit in his gaze
.....trade......for......
But by the time he finishes I’m already in my car
