Dirge for the Fateful Day

By David Sissac

The day has come. Yes, all, it is here…the 11th of September.

A day filled of embers, and ashes.

Hatred, despair and most memorably, the crashes.

Do you remember?

But now I ask,

Do you remember?

What Maya Angelou said so long ago?

That hatred is not just our enemy; it is our world’s greatest foe.

Hate has caused lots of problems in this world but has yet to solve one.

Hate is our weakness and brings chaos that has yet been undone!

Did you remember that hatred still must go?

Tragedy falls, but keep in mind,

That tragedy can fall behind.

We are not beyond hope.

We must take a step forward with a new type of scope.

We as human beings must break down the walls we have put between each other.

Regardless of race, religion, or beliefs, we must not make more pother.

For an era of peace, belongs to those who unite with their fellow mortals.

And then through example, we will create a world of couth morals.

Peace is not earned through the monotony that violence has become.

It is gained through empathy, and understanding where we all come from.

So tonight I ask that we don’t just bow our heads,

I instead ask that we light our lanterns in remembrance of the dead.
