Writer’s block. These are 2 words that can make even the most experienced writer nervous. Personally, I think that writer's block can be really frustrating especially when you just can’t get the words to come out and the blank page you've been looking at forever is just staring right back at you and this is when the inspiration to write just feels like it is out of reach. Writer's block happens to all of us whether you are an experienced author, student or just writing for fun trust me it will not discriminate.
Most people think that writer's block only affects inexperienced writers, but that is just not true Truthfully, a lot of accomplished authors face the same problems you do. The difference really just lies in whether you know how to respond and overcome it. This post is about understanding what causes writer's block and most importantly how to overcome it.
To understand writer's block we have to understand that it can stem from several different places. One of the most common reasons is Fear of Failure and the inner voice that tells you that your work deals aren’t good enough before you even start to write. Other times it could just be from lack of motivation and inspiration or in more simple terms just being burnt-out.
Personally, when I get writer's block, it usually creeps in when I start trying a little bit too hard to make my writing perfect on the first try. A good example of this would be that one time I spent three days trying to write a paragraph for a story I was excited about, but the more pressure I started to put on myself, the harder the writing became. Then eventually I had to walk away from it and when I returned to the writing, I started to enjoy the process again.
The good news about this is that writer's block isn’t permanent and doesn’t last forever. There are plenty of easy ways to overcome it. To start one of the most effective ways is to start setting small goals that are achievable and what I mean by this is instead of telling yourself to write an entire essay just tell yourself to write a paragraph or two that way you can’t get too overwhelmed.
So, if you're reading this you have or currently experiencing writer's block. Don’t worry, you're not alone, and most importantly you know now how to overcome it. Remember that every writer at every stage of their career experiences this and that you're not alone. What matters now is that you find your own way around it.
