Submissions are currently open for the Spring 2020 Issue of Janus Literary Magazine! As such, I wanted to write a post on what the goal of Janus is and why you - whatever your major may be - should submit.
Janus began in 1966 as the idea of Westminster's Professor of English Jay Karr and took work from students of both Westminster and William Woods, as neither school was coed at the time. Looking back through the archives, I found it interesting how both writing styles and the look of the magazine have changed throughout the years. The first edition, released in Winter 1966, describes the initial goal of Janus: "The Magazine Janus is named after the Roman deity of beginnings and with its two faces symbolizing beginnings and endings, signifies for us the end of the long silence of creative expression, and the auspicious beginning of a joint effort of our two campuses to bring student creative effort of a high quality to the light of publication."
Although many years have passed since the release of this first issue and William Woods is no longer involved, the goal of Janus remains unchanged. Publishing work from students with a variety of knowledge and backgrounds shows our readers the diversity of the collective mind of our campus. Send us your poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and visual art by March 1 so we can strive to embrace the artistic ability of the students of Westminster College.
