Product of Sacrifice

By Annette Ramirez

They came from Juanchorrey, leaving behind all they knew

Crossed the border with nothing but hope

Hard goodbyes, but full of unwavering support

They faced everyone’s judgment

One look at their skin, and people claim they’re criminals

But they worked so hard, harder than anyone I know

Built a future for us, all from dust

Now, here I am today, the first in the family about to walk that college stage

None of which would be possible without their sacrifices,

And I couldn’t be prouder to carry their blood
