Rusty Gold [haibun]
by Maria Hicks
Old dirt bats in the rafters and dust that marks
the faded memories left behind
not realizing those memories are still there
barely holding on but waiting for the right time
to have him remember
dirt dust starts to rise
the car is with him again
so old yet so bold
He thought he would never see it in its prime again
little did he know
the car brought him back to life
he found what he lost
the happiness he once had before the dust fell and the bats burrowed in the barns rafters
watching over the covered rusted old car
the mice made their home inside the catalytic converter chewing out the wires
the smile I saw
because of this old rusty car
made us both happy
